New network launches to support theatres and theatremakers in London

More than 20 theatres organisations have launched a new network dedicated to improving support for London theatres.

Supporting Theatre and Makers of Performance (STAMP) has been formed to make it easier for organisations to work together on ways to achieve this, as well as advocating the role of theatre in London. Ways in which they are looking to do this include publishing a programming database for London venues and implementing a series of events for producers and artists.

It is hoped that the network will also increase the dialogue between organisations, meaning smaller companies might benefit from knowledge they gain from theatres like the National or the Barbican.

Artistic director of Camden People's Theatre Brian Logan said that "joined-up thinking, transparency and collaboration between London venues" is what artists want.

He said: "STAMP is the result, and we’re thrilled it’s happening. Alongside our partner organisations, we at CPT are dedicated to ensuring STAMP makes London a more accommodating, easy-to-navigate and creative landscape for artists making new theatre and performance."

Performance artist Paula Varjack said it is "more important than ever" for theatres to work collaboratively "as the climate for arts funding grows more uncertain".

She said: "[STAMP] is exactly what is needed to better facilitate access to opportunities for artists in London, and for those outside of London who want to work here too. I look forward to seeing how it develops."

STAMP was established last year following Arts Council-funded research into the experience of emerging theatregoers. This research, undertaken by Dr Hannah Nicklin, indicated the need for greater dialogue between London venues, and STAMP is inspired by similar regional models in the UK.

The full list of member organisations includes The Albany, Arcola, Artsadmin, artsdepot, Barbican, Battersea Arts Centre, Camden People’s Theatre, Fuel, The Gate, National Theatre, The Old Vic, Omnibus Theatre, Ovalhouse, Penned in the Margins, Pleasance, Poplar Union, Richmix, Shoreditch Town Hall, Soho Theatre, Stratford Circus, Talawa, Tamasha, Theatre 503, Theatre Delicatessen, The Yard, Yellow Earth.
