Marianne Elliott and Emma Thompson in the Queen's birthday honours list

The Queen's birthday honours list has been announced, with writers, directors and actors such as Emma Thompson, Abi Morgan and Marianne Elliott all recognised.

Thompson has been made a Dame for services to drama, while theatre director Elliott, who established her own company with producer Chris Harper after leaving the National Theatre and whose production of Angels in America has been nominated for several Tonys, has been made OBE for services to theatre. Abi Morgan, playwright and screenwriter was made an CBE.

Elsewhere in the list, Keira Knightley was made an OBE for services to drama and charity while Tom Hardy was made a CBE. Actress Fenella Fielding was made an OBE and Paul Roseby, CEO and artistic director of the National Youth Theatre was made an OBE.

Actor Gary Wilmot was awarded an MBE for services to drama and charity along with director Kerry Michael, who recently stepped down from running Theatre Royal Stratford East. Caro Newling was made an OBE. Actress Sarah Gordy, who has Down's Syndrome, was awarded an MBE for services to the arts and people with disabilities.

Elsewhere in the arts, writer Kazuo Ishiguro was given a knighthood and composer Thomas Ades was made CBE.

The oldest recipient on the list was Rosemary Powell who is a 103 who received an MBE for services to charity. The honours system allows anyone to nominate anyone for an award.
