Marc Elliott joins Urinetown, Cast ready for first performance at WhatsOnStage Awards launch today

The ”EastEnder” will earn his musical theatre chops alongside Richard Fleeshman, who leads the ”Urinetown” cast in their first sneak-peek performance of “Run Freedom Run” at the WhatsOnStage Awards Launch Party this afternoon

Marc Elliott, aka Syed Masood from TV’s EastEnders, has joined the cast of the upcoming UK premiere of Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Urinetown, which opens at London’s St James Theatre on 11 March 2014 (previews from 22 February), for a limited run to 3 May 2014.

Elliott – whose stage credits include The History Boys and The Lord of the Flies – joins previously announced stars Richard Fleeshman, Jenna Russell and RSC regular Jonathan Slinger in the production, which is directed by Jamie Lloyd.

Further cast announced today are Chris Bennett, Alasdair Buchan, Karis Jack, Aaron Lee Lambert, Jeff Nicholson, Adam Pearce and Charlotte Scott. The cast also includes: Katie Bernstein, Cory English, Madeleine Harland, Rosanna Hyland, Julie Jupp, Mark Meadows, Joel Montague, Jo Napthine and Matthew Seadon-Young.

Richard Fleeshman, a previous WhatsOnStage Award winner for Ghost, will lead the Urinetown cast this afternoon in the production’s first, sneak-peek public performance as the finale of this year’s WhatsOnStage Awards Launch Party at London’s Café de Paris. The company will perform “Run Freedom Run”, from the Mark Hollman and Gret Kotis satirical musical comedy.

Debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival, Urinetown ran from 2001 to 2004 on Broadway, where it was nominated for ten Tony Awards, and won for Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction, adding to various gongs from the Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel Awards, Obie and Drama League awards.

Urinetown is set in a Gotham-like city of the future, where a hero leads the people in an uprising against private toilets.

The UK production is designed by Soutra Gilmour, with choreography by Ann Yee, lighting from Adam Silverman, sound by Terry Jardine and Nick Lidster for Autograph, musical supervision by Alan Williams, orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin and wig and hair design by Richard Mawbey. It’s produced by Julian Stoneman Associates and The Araca Group.
