Out of Joint will host a one-off reading of Thomas Kilroy’s version of The Seagull at the St James Theatre next month, directed by Max Stafford-Clark and starring Ian McKellen and Trudie Styler.

Set in late 19th County Galway, Kilroy’s version of Chekhov's classic was commissioned and directed by Stafford-Clark at the Royal Court in 1981 and revived in New York last year, starring Styler as Isobel.

Styler will reprise her performance as Isobel for the reading on Sunday 1 June, while McKellen will play Peter. They are joined by Stella Feehily as Pauline and Lloyd Hutchinson as Cousin Gregory.

McKellen last appeared on the London stage in Waiting for Godot opposite Patrick Stewart in 2009-10, which they recently reprised in New York.

The Seagull is the culmination of a season of readings of Out of Joint’s work at the St James Theatre, which accompany its production of Feehily's NHS play This May Hurt A Bit, which runs from 14 May.

Tickets also include a drinks reception, and proceeds from the event will help fund the work of Out of Joint.
