Alexandra Burke joins the cast of Chicago in the West End

Alexandra Burke will join Martin Kemp, Mazz Murray, Josefina Gabrielle and Paul Rider at the Phoenix Theatre

Alexandra Burke is to join the West End cast of Chicago, it has been announced.

Burke will play Roxie Hart in the revival of Kander and Ebb's musical, alongside Martin Kemp as Billy Flynn, Mazz Murray as Mama Morton, Josefina Gabrielle as Velma Kelly and Paul Rider as Amos Hart. Burke takes over from Sarah Soetaert from Monday 13 August until Saturday 14 October.

Kemp joined the production last month, replacing Cuba Gooding Jr who opened in the role of Flynn. Kemp will finish his run in Chicago on 1 September.

Burke's recent stage appearances include Svetlana in the London Coliseum revival of Chess, as well as playing Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard and Deloris Van Cartier in the Sister Act UK tour.

Kander and Ebb's musical won six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy. It tells the story of a young woman, Roxie, who is incarcerated and put on trial for murder.

The show is currently running at the Phoenix Theatre until 5 January.
