Hairspray, the Broadway musical based on John Waters' retro 1988 film, is apparently readying to shake its can in the West End. Set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray tells the story of geeky teen Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair, a big heart and a big stage mother (played in drag on Broadway by Harvey Fierstein) who finds celebrity on a TV dance programme. For the West End, Dame Edna Everage (aka Australian comedian and drag artist Barry Humphries) is being tipped to play her namesake, Tracy's mum Edna. No venue or date has yet been set for the West End premiere of Hairspray, though there's some speculation that it may be heading for Victoria Palace in place of Andrew Lloyd Webber's planned revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music.
