The competition is hotting up for the potential stars of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music at the West End’s London Palladium this autumn. The initial auditionees have been whittled down to the final ten in the BBC’s reality TV show, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? (See News, 16 May 2006). The winner of the TV programme will play the role of nun-turned-nanny immortalised by Julie Andrews in the 1965 Oscar-winning Hollywood movie for six performances per week. Viewers can vote for their favourite Maria out of the final ten from Saturday (12 August 2006). The ten finalists are Abi Finley, 23 (trained at Central School of Speech and Drama), Aoife Mulholland, 28, (also Central trained), Belinda Evans, 28 (trained at Welsh College of Music and Drama), Connie Fisher, 23 (trained at Mountview), Helena Blackman, 23 (trained at Guildhall), Laura Sicurello, 26 (untrained), Leanne Dobinson, 20 (singing lessons), Meliz Serman, 23 (trained at Guildhall), Simona Armstrong, 28 (trained at Bucharest Academy), and Siobhan Dillon, 21, (singing lessons), who just made it into the final ten after fellow contestant Emilie Alford pulled out citing the vocal strain of performing in a West End show as her reason for departure.
