As previously tipped (See The Goss, 23 Jul 2004 & 30 Oct 2003), Murderous Instincts will transfer to the West End this autumn, following its UK premiere in Norwich. The salsa musical will start performances at the Savoy Theatre on 10 September 2004 with a press performance on 7 October. It’s initially booking up to 29 January 2005.
Edwina, glamorous widow of the late rum tycoon, Bradford Buckingham, is awaiting the return of her grown children in the wake of their father's death. Soon after the arrival of the children and their spouses, all desperate to claim their share of the vast estate, the family reunion collapses into turmoil when Edwina disappears. The mystery unravels in a whirlwind of lust, obsession, jealousy and greed.
Billed as a “sensational night's entertainment of mystery and mayhem set to the seductive sounds of summer salsa”, Murderous Instincts was a 2002 hit in Puerto Rico. It features a salsa score by Alberto Carrión, with book and lyrics by Cinda Fox.
The UK premiere production is directed by Bob Carlton (of Return to the Forbidden Planet renown) with choreography by World Salsa Champion Jhesus Aponte. Design is by Dinah England with sound by Rick Clarke and lighting by Matthew Eagland. The musical is produced by Manny Fox.
The cast is led by Nichola McAuliffe (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Semi Monde) as Edwina, with Kevin Colson (Rat Pack Confidential, Chess, Aspects of Love) as Adolfo, Ben Goddard (Juan), John Capes (Reed), Simon Clark (Tweedman), Jonathan D Ellis (Miguel), Christopher Frampton (Christopher), Sarah Ingram (Felicia), Arvid Larsen (Colin) and Natalie O’Donnell (Lauren).
Prior to London, Murderous Instincts will play Norwich’s Theatre Royal, running from 27 August to 4 September 2004. Currently at the Savoy Theatre, Lorna Luft’s one-woman show about life with Judy Garland, Songs My Mother Taught Me will now finish on 21 August (See News, 26 Jul 2004).
