Punchdrunk Create Doctor Who Show with Moffat

The theme of Punchdrunk Theatre Company's upcoming Manchester International Festival (MIF) show The Crash of the Elysium has today (7 June 2011) been revealed as an adventure of the BBC's sci-fi Time Lord Doctor Who.

The Crash of the Elysium, which has been created by the company's artistic director Felix Barrett and screenwriter and author Tom MacRae, will be based on an original story idea from Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffat.

Punchdrunk, whose recent productions have included The Masque of the Red Death at the BAC, Tunnel 228 in collaboration with the Old Vic and The Duchess of Malfi co-produced with English National Opera, will stage the work in the BBC's new MediaCity UK site on Salford Quays.

Punchdrunk return to MIF following the success of their 2009 production It Felt Like A Kiss, with their new production the first work created specifically for young people.

The Crash of the Elysium, which is being created for children aged six to 12, will be presented for groups of 25 young people. Adults will not be allowed into the production if they are not accompanying a young person, with critics already warned the restriction will be extended to them.

The Crash of The Elysium, which has design by Livi Vaughan with Beatrice Minns, lighting by Paul Normandale and sound by Stephen Dobbie, will run from 1 to 17 July 2011.

It was recently announced that Punchdrunk's "immersive experience" based on the story of Shakespeare's Macbeth, Sleep No More has extended its run in New York due to "extraordinary public demand". The off-Broadway production, which Punchdrunk bill as their most epic production to date, features a 26-strong cast.

The production, which has won a Drama Desk and Obie Award, is now booking at New York's McKittrick Hotel until September 2011.
