Thursday evening's performance of Funny Girl starring Sheridan Smith was cancelled early in the first act, according to several members of the audience.

The show, which is currently playing at the Savoy Theatre in London's West End following a successful run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, was stopped with an announcement that "due to technical difficulties there will be a short break."

According to an audience member who has spoken to WhatsOnStage, this was followed by a 45 minute delay, after which the front of house manager announced the show would be cancelled.

The show hit the headlines recently when Smith missed the final week of the run at the Menier. Customers were later offered replacement tickets for the West End run.

A statement released by producers said: "This evening's performance of Funny Girl had to be cancelled for technical reasons.

"The production would like to offer all those affected by this the opportunity to exchange their tickets for an alternative date. Patrons should contact the box office."

Funny Girl runs at the Savoy Theatre until 8 October 2016.
