British director William Gaskill dies at the age of 85

The director was a former head of Royal Court and co-founder of Joint Stock

Joint Stock Theatre co-founder and director William Gaskill has died at the age of 85.

Gaskill was a pioneering director who ran the Royal Court Theatre between 1965 and 1972 and oversaw premieres of plays from the likes of Edward Bond, David Hare and Arnold Wesker.

In 1974 he co-founded Joint Stock Theatre Company with David Hare, Max Stafford-Clark and David Aukin. He worked alongside Laurence Olivier while the National Theatre was at Old Vic
