A really enjoyable night at TOSCA last night. Gheourghiu has developed her Floria and she is far more effective than before. I would still question whether she is really a Tosca but she is now a lot closer than before and you won't hear the role more beautifully sung.
Bryn is now one of the best Scarpias since Gobbi. He dominates every scene he is in without recourse to ham or bluster. He sings the role with subtety and huge power when required. he must record this role soon!
Marcello Giordani is a good old fashioned Italian tenor. He isn't a particularly demonstrative actor but he sings the role better than most Cavaradossi's around today. He is unfailing musical and has all the notes easily within his grasp. "Vittoria" duly rung the rafters and "E lucevan" was quietly introspective rather than the sobfest some tenors indulge in. Perhaps that is why it did not get a big round of applause?
Kent's production is old fashioned ina good way and unusually perceptive to the emotional undercurrents of the work. All in all a very good evening and continues the royal progress of a series of copper bottomed revivals to round off the season.
