Yet another groan on the plannng front here.

'Wonderful', another Twelth Night to fill a season up, mmmm, reminds me of the stopgap production between Richard II/Henry IV and Henry V a couple of years ago, with the American Malvolio, whose name has escaped me.

I am tired of this play, especially considering we got the excellent Filter Twelth Night here last november too.

Though have to say a revival of Arabian Nights sounds promising, and totally not what the rumours had been which was Matilda.

Sorry moan over.

John Lithgow?

We do seem to be having a surfeit of Twelfth Nights, I agree. (I enjoyed the Donmar one, though).

Also, the RSC Ensemble seems to have gone out of the window for this production - I don't think any of the names so far announced are part of the Ensemble, are they?

I imagine the RSC Ensemble are tentatively pencilled in for any West End transfer or perhaps a tour, come wintertime. :3

The ensemble I would guess will be preparing for their 2010 productions, or maybe West End, as they are hired 2009-11

I agree, Twelfth flippin Night. But I suppose they didn't consult with the Donmar lot before they planned it. Ah well, play on .. smile.gif

Properly miffed with the RSC right now... two of the plays the ensemble will do (Winter's Tale and Julius Caesar) were last mounted by the RSC themselves during the Complete Works a few years back, and now Twelfth Night in the same slot as the Bartlett production. Surely this is an opportunity to present something to take advantage of the Courtyard that has not been seen for longer than this. I understand the restrictions of casting for an ensemble which is why I forgave the WT and JC scheduling, but this is just LAZY. As is the casting of Malvolio. And Doran is already drawing out the Chekov comparisons. I hope I am proven wrong but this looks phoned in. Maybe the sales of the Other Russia season is so poor that a five week run of school parties is a necessity? The S in RSC stands for Shakespeare, and he wrote far more plays than Boyd et al seem to realize.

It looks like an attempt to recreate the commercial success of the Tennant Hamlet. Presumably the commercial producers who dictate the RSC's London season were not too happy with the Other Russia options and the low-key casting of the ensemble plays and demanded a big TV name to sell seats in the West End.

This assumes it will transfer to the West End - I imagine it will because Richard Wilson (and Tennant) are likely to have been more clued-up than John Lithgow was in requiring a London transfer before signing up.

As I semi-mentioned above, there was rumours of a production of Matilda, which I took to be Roald Dahl's excellent book, however there had been problems with copyright, but am not sure if this was supposed to be in place of Twelth or not.
