Having seen witches a few weeks ago in Norwich, just after it's official opening, I was really looking forward to seeing it again in Wimbledon last night. Having seen it in Wimbledon I was left thinking how has a show fallen apart so badly and so quickly!

Without Marti Pellow and Rachael Izen trying their best to keep the thing together, there was no show. Every dance number was a mess with no one seemingly able to dance in time with each other. The 3 witches were really hammy and over the top and their voices weren't that strong this time. The ensemble had no characterisation and all looked bored.

The whole thing was such a disappointment after having enjoyed the show so much previously. I hope while it's close to London some of the creative team can go and get it back on track for the rest of the tour.

I also saw this last night, having seen the original West End production 3 times with different casts.

My thoughts:

- Marti Pellow was terrible, wonderful singer but he was so over the top it was cringeworthy, he can't act

- Rachel Izen was very good and stood out

- sound problems big time but well directed, flying was naff though, set was fine for touring, orchestra was too small for this score

- ensemble was fine I thought but not amazing, although some nice character touches ocassionally

- young ingenue couple: fine but nothing spectacular, thought the girl was a tad too old really

- three witches - two of them were definitely too young-looking for their part. That whole line about despite wrinkles in our face I can still see that girl (end of act 1) just didn't work, especially Poppy who is in her late 20's! Apart from Ria Jones who did look about the right age but who was unfortunately a bit miscast because she looks nowhere near "fat" as her character is referred to in the script several times. Performances were fine, nothing spectacular, good singing, good acting but it was all a bit - predictable.

Verdict: There was a distinct lack of star quality attached to this show but then - it is a tour. Worth seeing if you get cheap tickets and don't expect West End standards.

I saw it for the first time in Wimbledon so have no previous to compare it to.

I thought it was quite good. Not amazing but an enjoyable evening.
I really liked Marti Pellow's interpretation of the character but really, someone who sweats THAT much should not wear a satin shirt!!! It was quite off putting to see him trying to be sexy whilst creating little pools around the stage!

i saw it on tuesday and REALLY enjoyed it. i saw the original west end production 27 times, and thought that it was great. my face lit up as soon as the overture started

i thought that the weak link of the leads wa poppy tierney, but then i saw jo riding 26 of the 27 times i saw it, and it was her part

ria jones and rebecca thornhill were both excellent - rebecca played sukie in the west end, and for me the character was more rounded

i thought that marti pellow was brilliant. at times seriously odd and creepy yet sexy - something that ian mcshane, earl carpenter and clarke peters lacked - they werent creepy enough!

i am seeing it again tomorrow and cant wait!

I saw it on Tuesday night for the first time and really enjoyed it. I thought that the set was pretty good for a tour version, although the witches houses didn't always match the correct woman! That did annoy me. Ria was by far the best witch, and whilst Marti was creepy and sung well, the sweating did distract me somewhat. I would definitely see it again though.

Saw the show in Wimbledon last night. Two performances stood out for me. Ria Jones I absolutely adored!!!!! Couldn't take my eyes off of her! Rachel Izen was, as always, a Pro! Both performances perfectly placed. Well done Ladies!xxx

I'll be going to the matinee at 4, so I'll let you know. Saw it twice in the West End, once at the Drury Lane, once at the Prince Edward.
I wouldn't say a word that could be reckoned as injurious,
But to find a mother younger than her son is very curious,
And that's the kind of mother that is usually spurious.

Hi Everybody,

I went to see this last night (5pm matinee and about half the seats in the dress circle were empty!) l have to say l was pleasantly surprised. After reading some of the reviews on the board..... l have to say l wasn't looking forward to it, infact l nearly never went..... l am so glad l made the effort to go.

For a touring production l thought the set/s were great and the show was brilliant. I admit Marti should have had on a black shirt at the beginning of the show.... then u wouldn't have seen the sweat! quite so badly. All in all a fantastic show with tickets just over £20..... for a show nearly 3 hrs long, although parking in Wimbledon is a nightmare..... cost £10.50, meters in the area also high at £2.40 per hour and minimum stay in just 2 hours.

Best wishes
Caz

Yes, I really quite liked it.

I think Ria Jones was my favourite of the three. I agree that Marti Pellow's performance was more of someone joking about being sexy than actually being sexy.

The set was great, and I really appreciated the details in the choreography - as all the townspeople got dragged closer towards Daryl in his first number, for example. And there seemed to be a lot of bottom slapping.

Although, if the show is set in the late 50s (as the programme says) did they really have answer machines, like the voiceovers?
