There is already a soundtrack to the Zorro movie. Stage shows have cast recordings and it is uncertain at this juncture whether one will be recorded.

The soundtrack to the film has nothing to do with the musical however, so let's hope that one is recorded soon!

Congratulations for totally missing the point of that reply! "Soundtrack" is the wrong word to use when talking about the songs from a show recorded onto a CD for us all to take home. It's called a "cast recording", and it helps clarification and snobbery if you learn to distinguish between the two on a theatre site. wink.gif

Other than Dress Circle...

I can't think of a single shop where Cast Recordings are not kept in the 'Soundtrack' Section (Take a look at ITunes for example). So IMO if somebody wants to refer to a Cast Recording as a Soundtrack they'd be absolutely correct. People on this forum just love being pedantic/pretentious. biggrin.gif

Totally 100% incorrect - a soundtrack is the name for the sound portion of a film reel, thus any live production cannot have a soundtrack.

These are cast recordings and anyone claiming they are soundtracks is merely copying an untruth.

I must admit, people calling cast recordings, Soundtracks is one of my pet hates.

That and people calling musicals, plays.

So by your explanation, Lyle, the original John Waters 'Hairspray' movie is totally a musical? Because that's where I find the DVD when I go into HMV. And ALL of Stephen King's books are Horror, because they're in the Horror section? Even his Fantasy and General Fiction and Literary Criticism books?

Most shops won't differentiate between soundtracks and cast recordings because most of the world doesn't care, but when you get into the theatre world, you find the people who do care. And once you know the difference, it really starts to grate. I don't really care that the shops don't seem to know any better, it's not their bag. But as it's my bag, I like to be accurate, and I know a great deal of other theatre fans do too. Even if you yourself don't care and are happy being wrong, it'll save everyone else's heads - and probably decrease needless drama and debate - if you do us the courtesy of keeping the two terms separate. wink.gif

And I've found non-Dress Circle shops that separate out soundtracks from cast recordings. In fact, I've noticed quite a few shops now simply call the section "Films & Shows", which helps my twitchy accuracy bone no end. happy.gif

With so many film to stage musicals (and an increasing number of recent stage to film as well) using the correct terminology IS important. Simply defining original / revival / studio cast or soundtrack will instantly make plain what you are seeking. It is not being pedantic, but there is a difference between Hairspray soundtrack and Hairspray OBC (and also - wishful thinking - a future Hairspray OLC) - and for older shows like Sound of Music there is a plethora of different recordings.

Simply labelling them all as "soundtrack" is lazy and confusing.
The engine roared, the motor hissed,
And who could see that the road would twist
