Has anyone seen it?What did they think?
The first ten minutes I thought I was going to hate it (much the same as the stage show) with Sophie posting the letters and then telling her friends bits out of the diary
I know its important for the plot but bit too cheesey.
Thought there was a bit too many close ups of Sophie while she was singing and bit stilted with them keep running up the hill to different parts of the island between each verse

However, overall i was so suprised
Really enjoyed the film and thought it was fantastically cast (except Sky)
It didnt stray too far from the musical but made good use of the scenery, unlike something like the prodcuers film for example where I felt like i was just watching the stage show on screen

The cinema was packed and everyone seemed to love it
It may not be the best storyline but your ceratinly come out smiling

Thoughts?

Well, I'm not sure - I first saw the clips of Meryl Streep and thought she sounded pretty good, but then the making of documentary aired over here and I was taken aback. Mind you I never saw the musical, but after growing up hearing Agneta Fältskog sing "The Winner Takes It All", what Miss Streep delivered made me keel over and cry, honestly is that what the song is turned into in the musical?!?? I don't think I'll pay to see that, even including Stellan Skarsgårds's input.

I enjoyed it but thought it could have been better...the direction was pretty poor but the performances were mostly really good. I thought it didn't quite capture the gleeful energy of the stage show.
He used to call me — Blue Roses.

I agree Meryl doesn't have the world's greatest voice, but her big moment on a clifftop with the gorgeous sunset and a huge red scarf is honestly the best bit of the film (and I loved it all). The whole thing is a big camp ball of fun!

Streep's rendition of 'The Winner Takes it All' is nothing short of sensational. Some of the best acting through song i have seen for a while. She owns that song and makes it mean something.

It also costs her something to sing it!! F*****g fabulous! I believed every word that came out of her mouth. Young and old generalised wishy washy actors take note. It's beautiful and all comes from truth.

If you want Ms Streep to move you to tears in another 'musical' do watch Robert Altman's last film, The Prairie Home Companion. She sings a song with her film sister Lily Tomlin about their mother, with the most exquisite harmonies, and certainly had me bawling. She seems to sing with utter unaffection, and make it so fluid and natural . Her fist stae show was a Kurt weill show wasn't it?

I went to see the film yesterday fully expecting to enjoy it (mainly because of the fantastic casting) and absolutely loved it! It is absolutely one of the best films I have seen for a long time. I haven't seen the stage show and don't know whether this is an advantage or disadvantage but it has now made me more curious to see it.

It is impossible to be disappointed by Meryl Streep, in my view she has never done a bad performance. Julie Walters is one of the best actresses that we have and the rest of the cast were also fantastic.....all in all a dream cast and the person that came up with these actors deserves awards!

It felt like one big party, great fun, very camp but also quite emotional.

GO SEE IT!!!

I think people who haven't seen the stage show will enjoy the film more. Fans of the musical will be left thinking about why some songs have been dropped (Thank You for the Music, Knowing Me, Knowing You) strange sequencing and why they couldn't cast three dads who can sing. Meryl Streep is OK but Donna and the Dynamos are all far too old. The direction is frenetic but the biggest problem is they take the story seriously. As fans of the show know, the plot is deliberately daft so as to allow the songs to be brilliantly inserted. The film is good fun, Amanda Seyfried is lovely as Sophie (and can sing prettily; stay for the end credits) and the Slipping Through My Fingers song is very touching (my wife cried as usual) but these were VERY expensive cinema tickets as we immediately decided we had to see the show again ASAP.

I saw the stage production a few years ago, and sadly hated it! It's down there with Fame and Cliff- the musical. So can say with much surprise that I really enjoyed the movie! could be due to the small fact of casting actors who can actually ACT in the film....take note, oh casting directors out there, you cant expect people to get engrossed in a story if they dont believe a word of what the 'actors' are saying!!

I definitely preferred the stage show. I thought the cringeworthy links into songs works so much better in live theatre. I preferred some of the casting in the film to the two London casts I've seen but generally I thought the film roles and direction didn't do the big name cast justice.
