I just saw JA sing Fantine in Les Mis - her last performance of Fantine, I think - new cast on Monday. I haven't heard her sing live before and I hate to say I'm not a big fan of Miss Saigon (cast recording - I've never seen it). Anyway I was pretty thoroughly underwhelmed by her Fantine. I'm willing to believe she was having an off night, if someone can convince me .... but I kind of don't get her popularity?

Anyone?

PS - anyone know what she's in next? I'd like to see her again before making up my mind.

hmm interesting,
I saw her in Feb and actually thought she was possibly the best out of that cast (granted I didn't like many of the cast at all). I thought she did a really good Fantine.

Joanna Ampil was the first Fantine I saw and the best Fantine I've seen since (of about 4 or 5 Fantines). I rate her very highly and saw her in Musical of Musicals where she was great. The ONLY thing I would say about her is that she has a kind of detachment about her that you can't really connect to but as far as her characterisation and vocal talent she is fantastic.

I definately think people's opinions on performers are great on this board. I really like how you all word the fact you didn't rate her. I'm a massive fan myself, and I thank you most graciously for being so respectful! smile.gif

Like you say, everyone has off days, and I heard in another post (from a massive J fan) that they weren't blown away by her that night.

From my Fantine experiences, she was head and shoulders above the rest. I thought she brought real youth to the character (I think that really works) and he acting (especially the death) left me distraught - a woman at the interval asked if I knew her as I was getting so upset!! Haha!

I have seen Jo play Fantine many times and saw the matinee on the 21st and thought she was as good as ever, I feel she puts a lot of emotion into the role as she does in the many roles I have seen her in.
As you say, we are all entitled to out opinions and I cannot comment on the evening show that day.
Her next show is Maria in West Side Story in Manila.

I think her Fantine is very good based on times I have seen her, her album is also pretty good too. Wouldnt call myself a 'fan', but I havent seen her give a bad performance to date. Funnily enough I have same feelings with rgeards to Kerry Ellis, meaning I dont quite get the mad love for her. But again I may just have not seen her on a good day.

I didn't get to see her Fantine unfortunately, but I do think she's phenomenal - her solo in Seasons of Love is pretty amazing.
whether or not it is clear to you,

Who are you?
Joanna is one of the most talented performers in the West End. Arguably the best Kim (Saigon) ever. She has a stunning tone to her voice and is an amazing actress... and she is absolutely loverly.
Just who are you to start a thread slating her? Were you having an off night tearing tickets?
