Lyric's Metamorphosis Better than Berkoffs?

I recently saw a production of metamorphosis at the Lyric theatre Hammersmith.

It's main aspect of brilliance was the set which gregor inhabited. The room upstairs was tilted so that the back wall of the set was the floor of gregor's room. This is hard to describe but was amazing to see. The torn walls allowed a brilliantly physcial perfromance by Bjorn Thors to crawl and hang off the surroundings. THe other aspects of set, including the removal of the furniture, trampoline and tear-through floor, were truely inspiring.

However, i felt performances to be lacking in some moments. This detracted slightly form an overall wonderfull production of David Farr and Gisli Orn Gardarssons adaptation of Kafka's work.

Another point to be made is how this compare's to the classic Berkoff production of the Kafka story. I love the berkoff version as both a translation and as a piece of performance. Personally i prefer Berkoffs version but was curious as to your opinions on the recent production and on the matter of Berkoff Vs Lyric theatre

I'm seeing the Lyric production in Newcastle in March. Very excited.
What was the Berkoff version like? How was it staged?

It was a very worthwhile production to see and you should be very excited!

The berkoff version is very different. It has more obscure dialogue and i feel it allowed us to see gregors thoughts more clearly. Also, mime is used more in berkoffs practice and this is not in the "lyric" version. It has a very different style and characters spoke directly to the insect gregor. This was an interesting approach to seeing the characters reactions to gregoras new appearance.

Hope you enjoy it and let me know what you thought of it.

Yup, what he said. I left feeling like I had seen the most alive piece of theatre for ages. I was struck by the set, the physical performance and the strange, restricted atmosphere. Excellent theatre
