The stage version of Cry-Baby, which premiered at La Jolla Playhouse last fall, is making the move to Broadway. The musical, based on the John Waters film of the same name, starts previews on March 15 at the Marquis Theatre, with an opening set for April 24.

Directed by Mark Brokaw and choreographed by Rob Ashford, Cry-Baby features a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, who won a Tony for the libretto of Hairspray, and a score by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger, the Oscar- and Grammy-nominated songwriter of the rock bank Fountains of Wayne. Waters serves as creative consultant for the production.

Baltimore, 1954. Everyone likes Ike, nobody likes communism, and Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker is the coolest boy in town. He's a bad boy with a good cause-truth, justice, and the pursuit of rock 'n roll-and when he falls for a good girl who wants to be bad, her charm school world of bobby sox and barbershop quartets will never be the same. Wayward youth, juvenile delinquents, sexual repression, cool music, dirty lyrics, bizarre rejects...Finally, the 50's come to life! For real this time!

Cry-Baby stars James Snyder as Cry-Baby, Elizabeth Stanley (Company) as Allison, Tony Award winner Harriet Harris (Thoroughly Modern Millie) as Mrs. Vernon-Williams, Chester Gregory (Hairspray) as Dupree, Christopher J. Hanke (In My Life, Rent) as Baldwin, Carly Jibson (Hairspray) as Pepper, Alli Mauzey as Lenora and Richard Poe as Judge Stone.

The design team for Cry-Baby includes set designer Scott Pask, costume designer Catherine Zuber, lighting designer Howell Binkley and sound designer Peter Hylenski.

To celebrate the show's 1954 setting, all preview tickets for Cry-Baby will cost just $54.
