Lots to look forward to in 2008. Some enticing productions include:

Met, New York - new production of Britten's Peter Grimes
ENO - Bernstein's Candide, via Paris and Milan
Opera North - new Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream, and a revival of their great Peter Grimes
Covent Garden - Strauss's Salome and Verdi's Don Carlos
Glyndebourne - Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel by the team that did last year's Fille du Regiment at Covent Garden (and at last the DVD of their Tristan)

Any other goodies that anyone has spotted?

I would love to see the met "Grimes" although it would be hard pushed to match the recent ROH one with Heppner. I think I'll give Candide a miss and I have a weird blind spot with Britten's "Dream" - the only one of his operas which just doesn't do it for me. I believe ON's "Grimes" is stupendous. I have booked already for Salome and Don Carlos (let's hope Villazon turns up). I'll probably have to miss Glyndebourne this year - the Bayreuth trip is costing a fortune...

Sebastian

I'll definitely be buying the Tristan tho.

Robert Lepage's production of 'The Rakes Progress' coming to ROH is supposed to be sensational. Conducted by Thomas Ades.

ROH is also supposedly featuring a new 'Flying Dutchman' in 2009 wink.gif

Curzon, I agree the most recent 'Peter Grimes' at ROH (via Brussels) was perhaps the finest and most moving I have ever seen.

Yes, I going to Rake. Hopefully the new DUTCHMAN will be with Bryn.
I thought the ROH/Brussels GRIMES was the best production I have seen. The relationships were so well delineated especially that of Grimes and the apprentice. And Ben was sensational - I've never seen him act better.

Do NOT miss Opera Norths' sensational Pinnochio when it comes to london in a couple of weeks. Very moving and the most magically designed show you will see in a long time, and crikey what a part is Pinnochio. Some great characters, stunning tricks, a huge heart, and ravishing music. Opera North do it once again. What a season they have had with a lovely unfussy powerful Butterfly, a shattering Grimes and this totally magical epic of Pinnochio.

The Dutchman is directed by Tim Albery, I can’t wait. It’s opening the season

Caurier and Leiser are doing Hansel and Gretel for the Christmas show

And Elektra is getting revived.

During the Olympic Year we will have a David Mcvicar Le Troyens, Richard Jones IL trittico and a revival of the ghastly ring.

Meanwhile at ENO;
Richard Jones - Cav and Pag,
David Alden - Grimes
Christopher Alden – Partenope
Jonathan Miller directing Alfi Boe in a new La Boheme

I’m very looking forward to Pinocchio in a few weeks time. Opera North are doing Capriccio next season.

WNO are doing Salome with Helen Field, yawn …

I went to see Lucia last night and it’s fantastic, it had a feel of Ariodante. Great singing and playing and Anna Christie for President! The most exciting opera production since Death in Venice.
