Ok, now however much any of us would hate to say it, I do not believe we are the main viewing public of the sweeney todd movie, it is going to be Johnny Depp fans, there may be plenty of us Musical fans but there is probably double the amount of Johnny Depp fans, so surely they will be the MAIN audience for the film, you may disagree, but they will certainly make up a fairly large portion of viewers, now most of them are 14/15/16 year old girls who are in love with him, well here's news, they wont be viewing it, as it is rated an 18, so wont that just eliminate a wide section of the audience, or do you think I'm being stupid?

There are plenty of Depp fans over 18. I have friends in their 30s, 40s and 50s who are big fans.
Also this film will bring in a lot of different fan bases - Sondheim fans, Burton fans, horror fans.
Not forgetting, of course Rickman fans like myself who will brave the gore (and the music!) to see his portrayal of Judge Turpin which looks pretty amazing from what I've already seen. (Still hoping to get Premiere tickets for next week)

A film version of a musical, especially one by Sondheim, is never going to appeal to the mainstream audience. A musical horror film, is going to appeal to even less.

I can't believe that this film was made to have a broad audience, yet it will appeal to many people who have a wide tastes.. Not as many as it would if it was a 15 rating, but i admire Tim Burton for making the film he wants to make.

I'm thrilled that the score is 75% intact and that it is mainly through sung, without having to apologise for it.

I can't wait for it to open and am glad it got made at all.

I completely agrre, but I mean if you go into any secondry school you will find about 60 15/16 year old Johnny Depp fans who have seen all his films, now when you think about every secondry school in the UK, you really are eliminating a wide audience!

I don't think being underage would actually prevent many actual FANS from seeing the movie... certainly not those only a year or two under-age.

I was just going to say the same Belle - I saw my first "X" certificate film aged 15. I don't believe that much has changed in the intervening decades!
The engine roared, the motor hissed,
And who could see that the road would twist

American teenagers will be able to see the film. I very much doubt if British teenagers form a significant part of the global audience and there certainly aren't enough of them to make a difference to Tim Burton's artistic decisions.

I presume the 18 rating we're talking about is the British classification. What rating is the film in the US? I don't think film makers can always guess what rating the censors will choose. What was the Spielberg children's film that was given an adult certificate about 20 years ago? (sorry, but my brain's falling apart)
Ooh, that Bernadette Shaw - what a chatterbox!

The film is rated R in the USA and Tim Burton did make the film with the specific intention that it would be rated R.

It won't be that hard for fans 15+ to see the film despite the 18 rating, don't worry!

The film is fantastic laugh.gif

I don't think film makers can always guess what rating the censors will choose.

They don't need to guess. They can submit films or scripts for rating well in advance of the release, and the censors will respond with something like "18, but lose the C-word and shorten the violence in this scene here and you can get a 15". Then the production team and the censors can trade back and forth to get something they agree on.
In my opinion anyone interested in improving himself should not rule out becoming pure energy.
