Story from WOS gossip

I suppose it's a more reasonable idea than reviving My Fair Lady.

Great. Saturday evenings filled with adorable little moppets pushed forward by parents who live in some fantasy world where their child has bucketloads of ability that has somehow gone unrecognised by those so-called "experts" who can't spot talent when it's right in front of them. We might as well start vomiting now to get in the practice.

Mind you, the story comes from the Daily Mail, so it's best taken with a pinch of salt and a healthy dose of scepticism.
In my opinion anyone interested in improving himself should not rule out becoming pure energy.

But if they are casting the Artful Dodger and Nancy, there won't be any moppets in sight. Presumably they're looking for 16 year olds - child actor regulations would make it difficult to cast Oliver himself in the same way as Maria or Joseph.

I'm looking forward to it. I enjoyed the BBC's last two efforts at reality theatre casting and I see no reason why this won't be fun too especially if there really are stage mothers to be mocked. The option to just not watch is always there.

But do we really need another Oliver so soon, and will it be a reworkign of the last Palladium production. It's a shame they can't put all this effort into casting a new show. Trevor Nunn and team might have balked at having done so with Gone with the Wind, but it would be a more interesting process about the creation of a show, than seeing the over familiar Oliver.

Armadillo, I suspect they'll be looking for someone younger than 16 for Dodger. Whilst he is definately that age or older in the novel, the musical has always had him portrayed as a bit younger, although you do make a good point about child working regulations.

Ah, let's face it. No amount of moaning from us is going to stop it being a roaring success so let's just sit back and enjoy it.

Anthony Newley was 17 when he played Dodger in the David Lean film and Jack Wild was 16 in the film musical. Surely they can't have them all living together for 10 weeks if they are under 16 unless they organise ordinary lessons as well as dancing and singing?

As you wisely say, it's going to be a huge success whatever anyone says. The BBC certainly have a winning formula so I'm sure we have another 2 or 3 of these to look forward to.

So what's it going to be called? I'd Do Anything? Consider Yourself? Oom Pah Pah? Or even Boy for Sale?

the law states that as long as they get at least one hour of schooling a day and that they are chaperoned by liscenced Matrons of entertainment then they would be fine, don't forget there were children in this years x-factor! if the show took place out of school time then only a Chaperone would be needed and no tutoring! so its very possible that they could do a search for a new oliver"!

This is my street, I smile at the faces I've known all my life, They regard me with pride.

But Jack Wild did look significantly younger than 16!!

The danger with the BBC is that they'll keep flogging a dead horse until everyone is utterly bored and disinterested, as they have done with many TV shows before.
