I was lucky enough to get two returns for the sold out first performance of the revival of "Tristan" at Glyndebourne. What an evening! A beautiful, non-intrusive production, fantastic playing and conducting and a world class cast. Nina Stemme is now the Isolde of our time. I can't imagine anyone else who sings the part as well and looks right as well. Meier may have more raw intensity but her top is far less secure than Stemme's. Robert Gambill may not be Ben Heppner but in a small house he is fine. Of the rest of the cast (all excellent) the superb Marke of Rene Pape needs mentioning. All of this, and the weather was sublime! Just a joy from start to finish.

One of the Sunday reviews of the Glyndebourne Tristan said that Glyndebourne are staging Meistersinger in 2010. Now that should be worth seeing if it is as good as the Tristan.

Depends very much on who gets to direct it (please not Jones or Sellars but would be happy with Lehnhoff or McVicar) and who sing Sachs. Can we hope for Bryn? dry.gif I would be very happy with Behloklaveck (sp?) as I thought his Tristan was incandescent. Pappano would be great too but I suspect he is wedded to Covent Garden for his Wagner....
