I'm MD for an amatuer panto in the new year and am putting some thought into the music. Having taken care of the music for this groups previous 5 productions I am now running out of inspiration for decent songs.

This years it's going to be 'Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood' and I cannot think of what to use as an opening number. Suggestions would be MOST welcome..... (bear in mind the kids range from 7 -14 years old).

Cheers!

My mind is an almost complete blank at this request. 7-14 isn't my specialism. All I can think of is an opening song from a panto that was used as the opening number in a 2nd Year Actors musical showing. The words went something like this:

Welcome! We'd like to say helloooo
On this very special day (2, 3, 4)
And if you came in feeling low
Then
Try to unwind,
...

...Come on, let's (something)
Celebrate with a (something)
Rejoice and shout HOO-RAY!

Then there was a dance break in 7/8.

Why don't you have a shot at writing something yourself? I don't think anyone is born a panto composer, you become one when you realise either it's not that hard or there's much more money to be made out of writing than musical directing.

Good luck.

Ooh, that Bernadette Shaw - what a chatterbox!

Well done, M. Maybe you'll write the whole show next time.

Maybe not! This is the last panto I plan to do for a while. I've done a string of 6 and I want a change and work on MD'ing or acting in some musicals and plays.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. I'm part of an ameteur dramatics society & i'm choreographer. Our MD recently left us quite suddenly so we're stuck for one more chorus song. Any help would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

What's the panto and what's the context of the song?

There's always a couple of staples of course

"On a wonderful day like today"(Kismet)
or something like "another opening another show"... (Kiss me Kate)

Good luck

That's not from Kismet. It's from 'The Roar Of The Greasepaint - The Smell Of The Crowd' by Bricusse & Newley.

Still, it's an effective chorus song.
