Hi - Has anyone heard any rumblings about a new production of The Country Wife at the Haymarket? I saw a wonderful production at The Royal Exchange Manchester in the late 80's with Gary Oldman and Ian McDiarmid - would love to see it again!

I saw that production - it had Alex Jennings and (I think) Cheryl Campbell. Imagine getting that cast together again!

It starts in September at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, after The Last Confession closes.

Each to their own.... I too attended on Thursday night, and whilst in pretty good shape for a first preview I really found this restoration comedy totally unfunny. Plenty of laughter was coming from the stalls but on the Royal Circle it was on the whole greeted with a silence. Not sure if that improved by the second act as by the time that started I thankfully was on a bus headed home!

I went to the first night of Country Wife and thought it hysterical and yes the stalls appreciated the humour and there was a great deal of laughter. It was a complicated play with lots of scene changes and lots that could go wrong, 'fine tuning' was needed but that's what preview nights are for, but it still was excellent! Toby Stephens' comic timing is superb and shows again what a fabulous actor he is!
It is a little strange, one person sitting in the Royal Circle felt that CW was 'on the whole greeted with a silence.' yet I had a friend sitting front row Royal Circle on the same night and she heard much laughter during the play and many positive comments as people were leaving. How strange!

I was that person in the front row circle - with my husband - who laughed heartily and thought it was great! As did many around me.
As you say - each to his own: this was a superb production and Toby's perfect comic timing was superb.

A great evening, wonderful production, fabulous acting, funny and worth every penny. I will be going again and again and again. If only all West End theatre was of this calibre.

And did I mention that Toby Stephens was FANTASTIC!

unsure.gif Why bother posting a review ...if you're not even going to sit through the whole play...everything I've heard about this play so far has been positive...apart from someone who was heading home on a bus before it was finished...if you wanted to see a polished production...perhaps you should have waited until the kinks...such as they were...were ironed out wink.gif
