Hi Guys,

I just wondered what your thoughts were on getting cast members autographs? Not necessarliy at the Stage Door, as thats not always possible, but what about sending a photo to a particular performer for them to sign and return to you? Is this ok to do or just annoying? Would you send the photo back to the theatre and mark it for the attention of the specific person or would you send it to the performers management company for them to pass on? Are performers usually quite willing to sign what is sent to them? Has anyone done this and been successful?! Any tips?!

Thanks!

In general, most performers expect this kind of thing to happen and won’t find it annoying at all! Of course, it depends on the person you are writing to as to what kind of response you receive. I know of several Westend cast members that are brilliant at replying, always send signed headshots back to you, along with a letter reply. Others, never reply.

But def include a SAE and send the letter FAO the person its for, and then “c/o stage door” – and then the address of the theatre.

Hope that helps!

i've always waited at the stage door and it works... usually if they see u've been waiting for them, they won't be so mean as to ignore or refuse an autograph that'll take 15 seconds....

Thanks for the replies!

I'd like to do the Stage Door thing but because of getting trains home, its not always possible.

I've written to one person (Jodie Prenger) and as of yet i've had no reply, altho maybe thats because I failed to put "c/o Stage Door" on the envelope?! Either that or I'm in too much of a hurry and she's just not had chance!

Knowing that others have been successful at getting a photo back makes me more confident about doing it so thanks very much for the info!

I wrote to someone recently (sent it to the theatre with their name on it) wasnt sure it would get passed on (guess it depends on the theatre). I didnt include anything other than a s.a.e but recieved a lovely small personalised signed photo :-D which was very nice,so its worth a try.

Principal usually cast members take a while to reply because of their busy schedule so I wouldn’t worry too much – even if you didn’t put c/o stage door on it, it will have reached her. I didn’t put c/o stage door on my first ever letter to Ashleigh Gray, but it still reached her and I had my reply within a week (she is a Standby though, hence the quick response!)

I don’t know of anyone that has written to Jodie so not sure about her response levels...but she will have received the letter I am positive!

I don't see the point of autographs other than the excuse to meet someone you like at the stage door after a perfomance. I would never send a SAE for an autograph - what is the point? A scribble on a photo? Plus you would never know if it was actually them that signed it anyway.

I'm a little bit of an autograph collector. Of sorts. I'm a bookseller, so if I meet an author, my first instinct is to get them to sign a copy of a book for me. I've met some very nice authors, I've met some not-so-splendid authors, and I have a small collection of signed books (I generally stick to one or two apiece, and it's mostly authors I admire rather than just any old author I come across; my favourite authors now tend to be ones who are not only brilliant writers but also ones who are lovely to encounter XD). But even so, I don't quite understand the autograph thing!

The Wikipedia has this to say:

"Autograph collecting is an enthralling hobby to collectors, who enjoy assembling a series of historical documents, letters or objects that have been signed or autographed by a notable person as a way of capturing a piece of history."

Which doesn't exactly go indepth on the psychology involved in collecting people's names as written by the people themselves, particularly when we're talking about getting a signed programme at a stagedoor rather than eBay bidding wars over political documents signed by various high-powered politicians. I might have to study psychology properly; fannish behaviour is something I understand from the "I get that people want to do that, and as long as they're not creepy, there's no harm in it" perspective, but not at ALL from the "WHY?" perspective!
