I'm a little bit of an autograph collector. Of sorts. I'm a bookseller, so if I meet an author, my first instinct is to get them to sign a copy of a book for me. I've met some very nice authors, I've met some not-so-splendid authors, and I have a small collection of signed books (I generally stick to one or two apiece, and it's mostly authors I admire rather than just any old author I come across; my favourite authors now tend to be ones who are not only brilliant writers but also ones who are lovely to encounter XD). But even so, I don't quite understand the autograph thing!
The Wikipedia has this to say:
"Autograph collecting is an enthralling hobby to collectors, who enjoy assembling a series of historical documents, letters or objects that have been signed or autographed by a notable person as a way of capturing a piece of history."
Which doesn't exactly go indepth on the psychology involved in collecting people's names as written by the people themselves, particularly when we're talking about getting a signed programme at a stagedoor rather than eBay bidding wars over political documents signed by various high-powered politicians. I might have to study psychology properly; fannish behaviour is something I understand from the "I get that people want to do that, and as long as they're not creepy, there's no harm in it" perspective, but not at ALL from the "WHY?" perspective!
