Not as good as the 3 reviews I read (they suggested a solid 3* effort at the very least).
It's at its best in the scenes featuring the UK based Mother & Daughter, who travel back to an Indo/Pak/Lanka village (the ma's home town) – the stroppy UK born daughter is nicely "right on" without overplaying the culture clash and Mommie Dearest conveys the oft expressed views of 1st gen Asians that their Homeland is better than Blighty – her localised broken English accent is wonderful.
Unfortunately the 2 Non Doms lack sufficient overseas tax credits to compliment the above pair– seemingly having taken their cues from Pirate DVDs of Goodness Gracious purchased at a Chennai Rickshaw Boot sale – possibly with a buy one/get offer of Dodgy Cinderella Twin Sister outakes. The fact that the Grandmother is played by someone young enough to be her great GdDghtr doesn't help.
Consequently it really blows hot n cold, yet Ma/Dgtr do connect on some level.
It's got a giant Puppet too and ends with a Concert Party song/dance routine...only lacked The Sergeant Major screaming "Shut Up".
Always felt beforehand it would prove t'be Bridesmaid of the trio of Bollywood Productions coming our way –Benha (Rep) & Behud (Belgrade/Soho) should be sexier.
The audience enjoyment is probably enhanced by the 'educational' factor, so it'd maybe register better than I judged.
2.5/5 (It ain't quite hot enuff Mun)
