“The staff are really exited too. Everyone’s giving me a little, doing a little that, when I walk past in the corridor, eyebrow raise thing, when usually they look away.”

I'm surprised by your comment about Maria Friedman - her casting would have made me want to go. Why the decision not to go because of her?

#and u might have had the decency to spell her name correctly

because she is the musical theatre equivalent of the emperors new clothes, her soulless performances are difficult to watch or listen to. I went to Cadogan Hall and previously i thought she was all style over substance, after seeing this performance there was little style either.

Performing is about more than the instrument, it has to move you and hold a mirror up to a reality, if i just wanted to hear an instrument that could hit quite high notes accurately and milk every note for all it was was worth to the detriment of the reason for the song - i would go and listen to a trumpet !! Although that is a disservice to trumpet players.

Go and watch her singing alongside Barbara Cook at the end of the year and you will see that while the years may have weathered her instrument somewhat, her interpretation will make you believe and empathise and not merely feel obliged to be moved.

well personally I love her a performer. I wouldn't say she was 'soulless' at all. I think she interprets songs brilliantly. I did believe, I did empathise..she got me totally involved in what she was singing... I would book to see something because she was in it I think.

I know some people don't like her as a performer....but I do!

Im one of those people, theatregoer who doesn't really like Maria. I think her acting's good but her singing voice is just - ew. It's so... thin, soulless, so pitchy. I've seen her in Joseph DVD, her singing... just cannot compare to Linzi hateley's for sure! Her performance in Hey! Mr. Producer and also live as Marion in WiW, whilst her acting is good her voice is, as I said, ew. Ruthie, on the other hand, sings Marion so much better imo. Haha I know alot of people out there are either loveMaria-hateRuthie or loveRuthie-hateMaria haha ~
I've also heard her sing Dot in the NT production of Sunday and she sounded so... easy to forget... I mean Bernadette's voice was so distinctive and Jenna Russell & Anna Jane Casey have so much... soul and you can hear their acting frmo their voice (not sure whether that makes sense)....

When you say you've heard her sing in SITPWG, do you mean the entire show, or just the few clips that are on the internet?
He used to call me — Blue Roses.

She was superb in SITPWG as was PQ. She was far more subtle than Bernadette Peters and the production as a whole was superior to the NY original. It was a crime that there was no recording made. sad.gif
