They tell you all about the theatre's history, you go into the auditorium and then backstage. You get to see some of the wardrobe department, the band room and under the stage where all the trapdoors and technical stuff are. Unfortunately, due to health & safety, you're not allowed on the stage, but you do get to watch a bit of the set up. For the price, it's definitely worth it, and you can ask loads of questions. It lasts just under an hour, so plenty of time to get a bite to eat before curtain up (or not in the case of Jersey Boys!).

I went on the Theatre Royal Drury Lane backstage tour in July and was a little disappointed. Most of it was spent around the foyer, auditorium, royal box and outside the theatre. Only a few minutes backstage and most of that under the orchestra pit listening to a talk about it being haunted. Boring!

Went on the Price of Wales Theatre tour today - lasted around 45 minutes, very informative - but again, little time spent backstage (substage to look at costumes, that's it). You notice a lot more about the theatre after you go on these kinds of tours though, especially with a theatre such as the PoW with its various refurbs etc.
Also, on a side note - it brought us a wave/wink from a cast member (we were front row, the tour host is friends with her).
Worth it for the money, I'd say.

Boring! I found that as well, though it was many years ago I went on the tour. Almost all my involvement in theatre has been backstage so I like to be shown practical matters about how the show is arranged, where things are kept, how things are done, and so on. I don't want to hear about the history of the theatre because I've read the account of it in the programme, and I heard all the theatre ghost stories as a child. I want to see things that can only be seen backstage.
In my opinion anyone interested in improving himself should not rule out becoming pure energy.

Boring! I did that years ago and thought the same thing. I noticed you actually got to see nothing really behind the scenes of the show (Miss Saigon at the time) and it was all about the building, and the building only!

Well these tours are NOT backstage tours but theatre tours!
If you did not like the Drury Lane one, do not bother doing the others, you get not much else to see but the orchestra pit and maybe the quick change dressing rooms.
I did the PE, PoW and Drury Lane ones in last years and I enjoyed all three, especially the Drury Lane one a it is like a little show itself with the tour guides actually playing little roles etc. When I went to the PE one the first time(when Mary Poppins was still on) it was awful as the lady doing it had no clue and was just reading from script and could not even answer the most basic questions. I did it then a few months later once Jersey Boys had opened and it was more fun.
