Recently it was announced that the historic Blackpool Opera House had joined a 10 venue list as being in such a shoddy and dangerous condition that demolition was 'On The Cards'.
So dangerous was the building that The Royal Variety Show has just played there.
The Opera House has been receiving an annual grant of £1m - WHERE HAS IT ALL GONE?
Over the past few years 5th rate acts, foul-mouthed 'so called comedians' and 3rd rate shows have been booked there while in fact the theatre has been 'Dark' more often than not.
2 years ago the local council informed me in answer to a letter of mine that indeed demolition was possible, with a Conference Centre replacing it.
Maybe now the Council should take the theatre back, put in a real theatre management to run it and make sure the £1m grant is spent on it and to demand that those previous £ms should be refunded immediately. Maybe the Council and the theatre management should be more truthful and a Public Enquiry be instigated.
Unbelievably, through the Royal Variety Show, a certain Peter Kay announced that Blackpool was 'The Entertainment Capital Of The World' what absolute rubbish, simply showing his ignorance. Second and third rate so called entertainment in Blackpool now is the norm and is simply shameful.
I have just received the new brochure from the Grand Theatre, other than the second rate Bill Kenwright productions there is nothing.
May I suggest you stay away from this appalling town and can I ask that the last one to leave, please turn out the lights.

Don't agree with you there regarding 5th rate acts appearing at Royal Opera house. How can you call Michael Ball 5th rate?? I do agree however with what you say regarding the theatre. It is pretty tatty and I could not believe there was absolutely nowhere to buy a drink after the show. We were too nervous to walk back to our so called hotel, which did not serve drinks, and there not even anywhere nearby. I went to bed gasping for a a nice cold beer!! A cup of tea does not taste the same. Great show though, MB was on top form....

I imagine this was scripted rather than Peter's actual opinion!

No way would I call Michael Ball 5th rate, far from it.
You should have seen the rest of the year's programme!!! When indeed the theatre was open, which was rare, 5th rate acts were indeed staged.
No managements now risk playing Blackpool, why? the state of the town, the drunks, the druggies.
The town has simply died a slow death since the comic genius Michael Barrymore's sell out season. Nothing has compared. Sad to say that Sun & News Of The World mentality crucified him. What a country we live in ! They should hang their heads in shame.
Slowly but surely the management have (I suspect intentionally) booked rubbish hoping to prove that the Opera House is no longer viable.
Blackpool Council are now in the throes of buying back the Opera House and The Tower. Pity that the Council have no idea about Entertainment, but having said that, anyone would be better than the present disgraceful management.
My advice to anyone again? Stay away.

The last time I went to the Opera House was some years ago to see the musical "Copacabana" and I remember then that the theatre was pretty tatty then. It's a great shame it has been left to run down so much and the programming of the venue is awful. It really needs the expertise of someone like ATG (Ambassadors Theatre Group) who can put Blackpool into their extensive network of provincial theatres and book big touring productions.

Unfortunately, Blackpool has a reputation for hen, stag parties & drunks galore. Until it does something to change this it is doomed. It will not attract quality theatre productions. Where is the theatre audience who will venture to Blackpool for a show when the streets are littered with foul-mouthed vomiting drunks? Blackpool needs to decide what it wants to be.

I remember in the early to mid 90's the palladium tour of Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat coming to blackpool and being utterly entranced by it. Its sad to hear about how its all going downhill
