This may well be a first, an entry being written on stage while a performance is taking place.

Sat on the side of the Barbican stage watching the scenes immediately prior to Caesar's death, some 2 hours into the show.

All I can say is if you can come one of the two next nights then come, it is an amazing experience!

Though you can go out of the theatre, there is food and drink on stage and an amazing camaraderie already amongst the audience.

Let me urge you to see this. I saw this in Edinburgh and it was a highlight of the Festival. It is funny, moving and very imaginative. Linda Marlowe transforms from young to old, comic to menacing..it is excellent.
In case you don't know what it is about : Carol Ann Duffy has written a series of poems which are written from the point of view of famous people's wives - King Midas's wife, Freud's wife, quite a few figures from mythology, Shakespeare's wife..all women who surprise us with their take on things and their husbands....and Linda Marlowe acts them like monologues with a few props, some lighting and minimal effects.
Cock, At The Royal Court

Has anyone else booked for this play? I got an email about it this week, now the last time I got one from the Royal Court, it was advising me about Grasses of a Thousand Colours being 3 hours long so I should have known it wouldn't be good news.

This play will apparently only be 1 hour 45 minutes without interval which is fine, but they also tell me that due to the unique configuration of the seating, some of the seats will have no back rests! Now I know good posture is important but that seems an awful long time to have to sit up straight with no break. There could be Annie Get Your Gun-like stampedes to get the 'good' seats, something to look forward to...

Another first class Almeida production - great set, acting and direction. Not entirely sure about the play, but it was interesting enough. Clare Higgins give the most superb performance. I don't think I've seen her before, but I'll make a point of seeing whatever she's in in the future (unless it's Greek Tragedy).

This is the second "therapist play" of the year from the Almeida (after Duet for One), and judging by the knowing audience laughter, one must assume that about 10% of Islington residents are therapists.

Stepping Out

ive just come back from the matinee of stepping out at the churchill in bromley, and i have to say i was quite disappointed overall - i am not sure what the director was up to - maybe they should have got julia mackenzie back to direct as she directed the original and the musical version

lucy williamson was very good as mavis but nobody else shone, and the design was poor

rosie ashe needs to remember if you are playing an old lady who walks oddly to keep up the walk all the time, and dont come on to join the dance number at the end and walk / dance normally

god alone knows why (other than to put bums on seats) anyone would cast brian capron and jessie wallace. it brings out the total morons who are attracted by a nice tv name irrespective of the fact that they couldnt act there way into or out of a paper bag - a great example of this was the three women sitting next to me who talked through the entire show - ladies if you are reading this stay at home next time, or if you choose to talk then dont be surprised that someone tells you to shut up - they told me i was rude for having a go at them - get over it girls, stay at home, paint your nails and read bella

Pains Of Youth

As a Katie Mitchell virgin, I had serious expectations of weirdness with this - but was completely let down! Some strange things with plastic sheets and plastic bags, the meaning of which is completely beyond my comprehension, but apart from that, hardly any pretention at all, and all rather straight and effective. The scene changes ( which I assume are all Mitchell ideas) are just as worth watching as the play itself.

The play is about a bunch of ghastly medical students and their associates, being very decadent and saying things like "You didn't make love to me, you made love to your own pain!" and "let's die together!" I didn't find it at all profound or moving, but I rather enjoyed it in a gigglesome sort of way.

It was a full and appreciative house (didn't seem to be any empty seats after the interval), and considerably younger than the audience for The Power Of Yes.

Finished about 9.55.

Annie
