Semi-retired widow Fran, writer for the Winkham Weekly Snooze, decides to start a writing group for local women. She is joined by Penny – a single, disillusioned, reluctant PE teacher, Janet – a shy and retiring librarian with a love of history, and Annie – a bored housewife whose children have recently left home. The four lonely women discover a mutual love of wine, vodka and creativity, and over a few months change each other’s lives forever. Fran proposes that they enter a local drama competition to give their writing a focus, and Janet suggests a play about Boadicea. Their attempts at drama turn out to be amateurish and comical, but the qualities of loyalty, courage and tenaciousness that they and Boadicea share soon become clear.
