About the Show

PER-SO-NA blurs the lines between fact and fiction, and uses food as a central device to defy conventional labels of Sexuality in one fast-paced moment of metaphors. Told with honesty, humour, and passion with Apinke’s distinct language and style. It is sensitive, engaging and combines Live-cooking, identity and contemporary art into a 50-minute theatrical experience. PER-SO-NA is a solo show about a Yoruba Nigerian girl – that isn’t so Nigerian. Tough, Vulnerable, Woke, Traditional, Queer. It unpacks clashing identities of what it means to be not-so-typical, and explores the ordeal of being defined by labels and the artificial construct of cultural borders. The continuous development of PER-SO-NA aims to be beyond a single live performance, but into a touring multi-disciplinary arts installation/exhibition that explores and celebrates the central themes of sex, gendering and racial culture; featuring art film, photography, soundscape, testimonials and behind-the-scenes documents of Kafayat’s journey of discovering, developing, and creating this body of work over the last 15 years.
