At the age of twenty, Verity Taylor was charged by the police with damaging a chair by fire – value £6 – in a locked ward of the mental home where she was a patient. Later she was committed to Broadmoor, ‘from where she may not be discharged or transferred elsewhere without the permission of the Home Secretary’. A true story, the play explores the struggles of both Verity and her family as she grows up, and investigates the difficulties that confront parents as they endeavour to provide a stable family life and ultimately to seek adequate alternative care. Find Me is a searing account of how we care for the mentally ill in our society which is as relevant today as when the piece is set.
