Inspired by a German short story by Wolfgang Borchert. Post WW2 Hamburg. Food is scarce. A couple agrees to ration the bread equally to make it last. Early one morning the wife finds the husband in the kitchen. On the table is the loaf of bread which she had tidied away the evening before. She suspects he has broken their pledge by stealing an extra slice. What happens next has great significance for them both. A thought-provoking, at times humorous, warm and moving play.
