Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion have been collaborators for 30 years, slowly building a body of work which straddles the line between dance, music, performance art and comedy. At Sadler’s Wells, Burrows & Fargion will present their two most recent duets. Rewriting (2019) is an increasingly complex memorised choreography of cards, counterpointed by a rambling love letter to the impossibility of choreographing and accompanied by music played on a Casio keyboard. This is followed immediately by Science Fiction (2021), a loud, accumulative music performance for synthesisers and percussion, which will leave you wondering what might happen next. The performances the pairing create have drawn an international following for their integrity, openness and independent stance. The work is hard to place, combining intellectual rigour with unexpected humour, but it has its roots in a shared love of classical music, which the two artists clash against an approach to performance that is both anarchic and joyful.
