About This Show

Shakespeare’s plays are a favourite source for opera composers, and this concert will feature pianist Kelvin Lim, with soprano Claire Wild singing Juliet’s ‘Je veux vivre’ from Gounod’s Romeo & Juliet; Claire and tenor Joseph Doody performing a lockdown version of Nanetta and Fenton’s duet and baritone Rodney Clarke singing Ford’s troubling ‘jealous’ aria, both from Verdi’s Falstaff (based on The Merry Wives of Windsor). Deaf actor Lara Steward will perform Juliet’s ‘Gallop apace’ monologue, full of passionate anticipation, in British Sign Language, and writer and actor Kat Rose-Martin will perform Isabella’s ‘Could great men thunder’ from Measure for Measure and her own newly written response piece to Shakespeare and Verdi’s Ford. Finally, the cast will sing us into what we hope will be a brighter springtime, with Finzi’s setting of ‘It was a lover and his lass’.
