About This Show

Magda’s husband is hounded by the secret police and flees the country to escape the terrifying threats. Magda’s fears, frustrations and lamentations are played out as she continually tries to see The Consul. Her desperate attempts to get a visa and re-unite her family show up how helpless she is to over come the authoritarian power. First performed 1 Mar 1950.

In Summer 2019, Welsh National Opera addresses the issues of justice, freedom and human rights through a season of operas, debates, discussions, exhibitions and digital projects. At the heart of their FREEDOM Season are four semi-staged operas across three evenings in the Donald Gordon Theatre and one fully-staged opera in the Weston Studio. Gian Carlo Menotti’s 1950 work The Consul ? about the desperate wait for a visa ? could not be more topical.
