Testmatch is a fast-paced, study of sport, gender politics and the legacy of colonialism. Filled with coruscating dialogue and blistering humour, it traverses both continents and centuries. In the first half we’re at the Women’s Cricket World Cup at Lord’s: England versus India. When rain stops play, tensions rise between the teams stuck in the players’ lounge together. Secrets spill about relationships, cricket boys versus rugby boys, ambition, and the integrity of the sport. In the second half, two British administrators in early 19th century India are preoccupied with setting down the rules of the game and tracking down mangoes, until they are forced to confront challenges off the field of play that threaten the entire regime.
