Korn/Ferry Opera Holland Park has opened bookings (online today, by phone from Monday 30 March) for its 2009 season. There are six productions in the line-up, starting with Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux on 2 June through to Janacek’s Kat’a Kabanová, which opens on 24 July.
Janacek’s 90-minute Katya Kabanova is amongst the most compact dramas in all opera. The composer’s own libretto, based on Ostrovsky’s 1859 play The Storm, is of such dramatic economy that the storytelling aspect of any production has to be pin-sharp.
English Touring Opera, this year celebrating its 30th birthday, will launch its Spring tour at Hackney Empire on 12 March. The two new productions are The Magic Flute and Katya Kabanova, Janacek’s devastating masterpiece based on Ostrovsky’s The Storm. From there, they will tour to many of their regular venues regionally through to the end of May.
