Wicked: For Good and Hamnet nominated at the Golden Globes

Film adaptations of stage favourites have triumphed at the Golden Globes, as nominations have been revealed.

Wicked: For Good, the second part of Jon M Chu’s screen adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, was released in November. You can read our review here.

Based on the hit novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Wicked tells the story of two unlikely university friends in the land of Oz, one destined to become Glinda the Good and the other, the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked writers Winnie Holzman (book) and Stephen Schwartz (score) collaborated on the screenplay with Dana Fox.

Erivo and Grande were (again) nominated for their performances as Elphaba and Glinda, while the film was nominated for box office achievement.

The two new numbers, “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble,” by composer Schwartz, are both up for Best Original Song.

The upcoming film adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, received six nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Best Screenplay, and performance nods for its two leads, as well as recognition for its director, Chloé Zhao, and score by Max Richter.

Buckley plays Agnes Shakespeare while Mescal plays William Shakespeare, in a story set in 1580s England that centres on the death of their young son, Hamnet, and the impact of this loss on both their marriage and Shakespeare’s later writing. A WhatsOnStage Award-nominated stage version of the novel previously ran at the RSC and in the West End.

Hamnet is set for a UK release on 9 January 2026.

Also up for awards is Jack Thorne’s and Stephen Graham’s Adolescence, with its stars Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty and Graham in contention.
