The Theatres Trust has released the list of theatres in the UK that are at risk of closure, redevelopment or demolition this year.

Three new additions make the list of 31 theatres that appear on the register this year. Theatr Ardudwy, Tottenham Palace Theatre and The Intimate Theatre in Palmers Green join the list which also includes Brighton Hippodrome, Theatre Royal Margate, Streatham Hill Theatre in London and The Broadway in Peterborough.

The theatres on the register all have architectural merit or cultural heritage and the potential to be returned to their original use. Recent research undertaken into the Walthamstow Granada showed that once the venue is renovated, between £34 million and £52 million could be added to the local economy over a ten-year period.

Jack Dee, Theatres Trust ambassador, said: "Each and every building on the Theatres at Risk register could have a bright future as a performance space with the right support from funders, local authorities and communities working in partnership. Each will recoup that investment many times over, attracting visitors to an area, kickstarting regeneration – and contributing to the sense of wellbeing of the local community."

More than half the buildings on this year's register are empty, which makes it much harder for the building to be returned to use. A recent success story, however, is Alexandra Palace Theatre which was removed from the Theatres at Risk register and reopened in December after a six-year restoration project.

Seven theatres have been removed from the 2018 list, which include the Alexandra Palace Theatre, The Cryer, Hulme Playhouse and Workington Opera House. The Coronet in Elephant and Castle has been taken off the list as it is due for demolition to make way for a shopping centre site.
