9. 42nd Street

Drury Lane Theatre

42nd Street is an uproarious evening, the story of a show within a show told with non-stop vibrancy and energy. Based in the 1930s, the show won the Tony Award for Best Musical when it first debuted in 1980. "The razzmatazz of the staging is so preposterous that it makes you smile" said Sarah Crompton in her review for WhatsOnStage.

8. Disney's Aladdin

Trevor Dion Nicholas's Genie has already enchanted thousands of punters, but the magic of Disney's Aladdin is far from over for the production, now boasting a new titular actor in the form of Matthew Croke, who took over the role a few months ago.

7. The Book of Mormon

Prince of Wales Theatre

The Book of Mormon went from a critical to audience classic in no time when it opened in the West End back in February 2013. With music and lyrics from Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, best known for their animated series South Park, the show's shock factor is only matched by its endless hilarity.

Jez Butterworth's new play has the record for being the fastest selling show in Royal Court history when it debuted earlier this year. Coupled with the raft of positive reviews, the show has hit the West End with similar energy, already extending booking through to January 2018.

5. Wicked

Apollo Victoria Theatre

Wicked has become a West End classic, the firmest fixture at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in recent memory. The revisionist musical based on The Wizard of Oz has birthed classic showtunes including "Defying Gravity", "Popular" and "For Good". With a new cast announced only two weeks ago, this trend is guaranteed to continue when some new blood steps into the magical land of Oz.

Benedict Andrews' version of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof marks the first time the Young Vic has debuted a show directly on the West End.
