The Old Vic will stage the UK premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning Tracy Letts’ play Mary Page Marlowe this autumn.

Set to star in the production are Oscar winner Susan Sarandon, marking her UK theatre debut, and Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough, returning to the stage for the first time in 15 years. The production will be helmed by the Old Vic’s artistic director Matthew Warchus and presented in-the-round.

Mary Page Marlowe is described as a “vivid, time-jumping mosaic of one woman’s life”, where five performers portray the titular character at different ages. You can find out more about the play from our New York sister site Theatermania’s review of its 2018 Off-Broadway run.

Warchus said: “I’m delighted to be kicking off my final season at this wonderful theatre with this sensational new play from one of America’s greatest living writers. And what a privilege to be featuring two such superlative actresses, Susan and Andrea, on the Old Vic stage, along with a large cast and creative team abounding with exceptional talent. I’m also really excited to be returning the Old Vic auditorium to perhaps my favourite configuration, and look forward to welcoming audiences to an unforgettable year of fully in-the-round, immersive, 360 degree performances.”

The Old Vic has confirmed that every production during Warchus’ final season will be staged in-the-round.

Letts added: “From my first experiences as a playwright here 30 years ago, to the run of August: Osage County at the National, London is an integral part of my development as an artist. I’m deeply gratified to have Mary Page Marlowe at the Old Vic, directed by Matthew, featuring these remarkable actresses. A genuine thrill.”

Riseborough commented: “It’s an honour to be taking on the role of Mary – amongst others – in Tracy Letts’ poignant play, alongside the extraordinary Susan Sarandon. I’m so very grateful to be working with Matthew again and thrilled to finally work at the Old Vic, a beautiful space. I look forward to us all bringing life to Matthew’s remarkable vision for the play.”

Finally, Sarandon said: “I’m so honoured to be asked to be in a play during Matthew Warchus’ final season at the Old Vic. Terrified but excited.”

The production will feature set and costumes by Rob Howell, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker, and casting is by Jim Carnahan. Additional creative team cast members will be announced at a later date.

Mary Page Marlowe runs from 23 September to 1 November, with a press night scheduled for 8 October. Tickets will go on sale to members at 10am today and will be on general sale from midday on 4 July.
