Theatre Royal Stratford East has announced plans to workshop a stage adaptation
of City of God.

Directed by Brazilian Marcus Faustini, the show is based on the critically acclaimed novel by Paulo Lins, which was also the basis of the Oscar-winning 2002 film.

Set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and loosely based on real events, City of God
charts the journey of two friends growing up in the infamous Brazilian slums.

Faustini, who will present the workshops on 16, 17 and 18 July in front of an invited
audience, said: "I'm really looking forward to working in London and exploring this piece.

"Choosing to work from the novel, rather than the better-known screen adaptation, allows us to delve into the story in a more intense and compelling way."

Artistic director Kerry Michael added: "We will be employing three British actors to work with Marcus and the novelist, Paulo Lins. It's going to be a great four weeks workshopping this piece and we’re all looking forward to the sharing at the end to see what they have created."
