Siddhartha, the Musical (Edinburgh Fringe)

Travelling to Edinburgh after successful North American and European tours, this Italian production follows the story of young Prince Siddhartha after he discovers the reality of 'normal' life outside his palace.

The music and choreography demonstrate a fusion of Latin flavours that bursts with colour and excitement throughout the show.

The costumes are a fabulous display of Asian influence that truly dazzled the packed out Assembly Room audience – even if a few of them could be forgiven for feeling patronised by the interpretation of Herman Hesse's novel, which feels at times like a lecture on how best to live your life.

The suspect backing track used for the ensemble vocals is a disappointment considering the principal cast are all in fine voice. But the dancers certainly don't fail to deliver Giordano Orchi's incredibly well-timed choreography.

Despite some moving music and lyrics, the combination of dance and music doesn't quite mesh together. With a little more work on the score, this musical could go far.
