Spall will star alongside the previously announced Kyle Soller (Poldark) and Ruth Wilson (Luther) in Ivo van Hove's production, which opens in the National's Lyttelton Theatre on 12 December.

Hedda Gabler is Ibsen's iconic play about a woman who has just married and yet longs to be free. Patrick Marber's new version is performed for the first time at the National Theatre.

The rest of the cast include Chukwudi Iwuji, Kate Duchêne, Éva Magyar and Sinead Matthews.
