Rachel Zegler was joined by an extra special guest at The London Palladium.

Yesterday, 5 October, Zegler performed her first-ever solo concerts at the theatre where she spent the summer playing Eva Perón to critical acclaim.

We recently spoke to her fresh off the back of her win at The Stage Debut Awards – read that interview here. Prefer to listen? We had her on the WhatsOnStage Podcast!

The setlist comprised musical theatre favourites from the likes of Stephen Sondheim, Sara Bareilles, and Jason Robert Brown, plus pop numbers from Amy Winehouse (Zegler too is a “Camden girl”), her “friend” Ariana Grande, and Fleetwood Mac – with Stevie Nicks credited for inspiring songwriting.

Zegler also performed numbers from her career, including “High Flying Adored” from Evita, “Somewhere” from West Side Story, “Waiting on a Wish” from Disney’s Snow White, and “Pure as the Driven Snow” from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It marked the first time that the musical numbers from the Hunger Games film have been performed live, with musical director Adam Hoskins and the band bringing the Covey spirit to the West End.

Other numbers included “Man of the House” from her Broadway debut in Romeo and Juliet, a cover of Barbra Streisand’s “My Man”, “Feed the Birds” – described as a “love letter to London” – from Mary Poppins, and two original songs.

As part of the show, Zegler welcomed Ramin Karimloo to the stage for a duet of “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George. It followed a rendition of “Stars” from Les Misérables, with the performer confessing her dream role would be Javert.

To conclude the evening performance, Zegler was joined on stage by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Webber said: “This is the first time I’ve ever accompanied anybody, in any theatre, anywhere.”

The two proceeded to perform “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from The Phantom of the Opera, with Webber playing piano. You can watch the full performance below:

Earlier this year, Webber admitted that he “senses there’ll be a new Phantom of the Opera film soon.”

The much-loved musical is celebrating 39 years in London this week. Meanwhile, in New York, an immersive production, entitled Masquerade, is up and running, with a host of Phantom alumni.
