Photos: Van Outen Joins New Legally Blonde Cast

Last night (9 November 2010) saw Denise Van Outen take over from Jill Halfpenny as hairdresser Paulette in the West End production of Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre. She joins Sheridan Smith who plays sorority girl Elle Woods, Alex Gaumond as Emmett, Simon Thomas as Warner, Siobhan Dillon who plays Vivienne and Carley Stenson as Margot.

The cast were joined at the Opal Bar after the performance by Duncan James who previously played Warner, his former Blue band-mate Antony Costa, actresses Verity Rushworth, Tina O’Brien, Catherine Tyldesley and Cassandra Compton, actor Russell Tovey, dancer Jared Murillo, presenter and comedian Frank Skinner and ITV Essex Girl Amy Childs.

Legally Blonde is the the first stage outing for Van Outen since the birth of her first child, a daughter, with Lee Mead, who is himself currently treading the boards in Wicked. Van Outen’s previous musical credits include Tell Me on a Sunday, Chicago and Les Miserables.

Since finding fame on Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s TV competition, How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, Siobhan Dillon, has appeared in the West End production of Grease and tours of Can’t Smile Without You and Cabaret. Carley Stenson, who plays Margot, is best known as Steph Cunningham from Hollyoaks, a part she played for ten years.

The musical comedy, which premiered on Broadway in April 2007, is based on the 2001 Hollywood film in which Reese Witherspoon played California sorority girl Elle Woods who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School in an attempt to win him back.

Legally Blonde is directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. The show has music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and a book by Heather Hach. It is produced in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions.
