No matter when or where or who… we’re excited!

At the National Theatre’s official West End opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest last week, we caught up with the principal cast after the show (and you can find out what they had to say about the much-loved production here). One of those individuals was Olly Alexander, returning to the London stage for the first time since 2013.
The performer has enjoyed success in the music industry – both as a member of Years and Years and as a solo artist – and perhaps his most celebrated screen role to date came in 2021, portraying Ritchie Tozer in the hit TV series It’s A Sin.
We asked Alexander about the possibility of the acclaimed television show making its way to the stage and he gave a surprisingly candid response.
“I can tell you that there has been work to make It’s A Sin for the stage,” he confided. “I think there’s even been work on making it into a dance piece, a musical, and I know there’s various people working on it. So, watch this space. Yeah, we’ll have to wait and see.”
It’s A Sin, written by Russell T Davies (Doctor Who) and directed by Peter Hoar (The Last of Us), launched on Channel 4 in January 2021. Predominantly set in London between 1981 and 1991, it depicts the trials and tribulations of a group of gay men and their friends during the AIDS crisis in the UK.
Alongside Alexander, the cast also included such stage favourites as Omari Douglas (This Bitter Earth), Callum Scott Howells (Cabaret), Nathaniel Curtis (2:22 A Ghost Story), Keeley Hawes (The Human Body), Tracy-Ann Oberman (The Merchant of Venice 1936), Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and Stephen Fry (The Importance of Being Earnest).
We’ll keep you informed here at WhatsOnStage for further details on this future project.
